Prepping for Arrival

Hey all!
Wow, what an outpouring of love and support we've received in the past few weeks! Your kind words, prayers, care packages and visits have warmed our hearts and filled us with such peace and love for our friends. Each of you are so appreciated, for the part you are playing in our healing. Your gestures of support mean more than we can ever put into words.
I thought I'd touch base with ya'll once more to give an update to our preparation plans for Piper Grace's arrival. We are looking forward to family trickling into town as this weekend begins our birth journey.
  • Friday AM - My mom, Mimi, will fly into town!
  • Friday PM - Matthew and I will take one last opportunity to go on date before life changes for a bit. (Here's hoping it's at my favorite restaurant.....wait.....who am I kidding? I love everything that is edible, so here's to me having a great meal regardless!) Woo Hoo! I truly cherish this time to spend with Matt, whether it's laughing, or in quiet contemplation of what's ahead. I am so blessed to have a partner that I can lovingly do both with, and feel completely at peace.
  • Friday Late Late PM - The rest of the Tyler clan arrives by car! My dad (Grumpy/DoDo), grandma Pat, brother Drew (Uncle Whiskey), his gal pal Heather, and my grandfather Mikey will all be here for support. Please pray for their safe drive (and for them to remember to bring me Chicken Express Rolls. Texas peeps, you know what I'm talkin' bout!)
  • Saturday PM - Matt's parents, Oma & Grandad, will join us for a big family dinner for fun, fellowship, fun, and fun. We will be so excited to have everyone together.
  • Sunday AM - As a family, we will take one last summer trip to Kansas City's River Market to show Drew & Heather the sights...and eat beignets. Do I see a food theme here? If you follow us on facebook, you know this has become a fun family tradition and I'm more than happy to choose this as my last eating adventure before I fast for the hospital process. Beignets for all! What a great weekend itenerary for quality time and fun with the ones we love so much. I am so grateful to have this time with them.
  • Sunday PM - Matt and I will head up to the hospital to begin some cervical prep for Monday's big induction. Little will be happening this night, but relaxing and gearing up for Piper. Matt's sister, Aunt KK, will also be arriving from OSU, completing our family support.
  • Monday AM - August 4th, Children's Mercy Hospital. The official begin of inducing labor. After that, your guess is as good as ours as to how long it will be before it's time to delivery our sweet girl. We are prepared to be calm, patient, and spend quality time with family during this process.
This is when the unknown begins. We do not know how Piper will be at delivery, we do not know how much time we will have, we do not know a single thing. We have embraced this fact, and decided to jump on the ride, and savor every moment until the time comes for the ride to stop. That's it. I pray that our minds are open and ready for love and peace during Piper's life; and not clouded by fear of pain. I am so thankful that we will have time to experience her as a family, together, no matter how long she's here.

Please pray for everyone's hearts during this process. From new parents in emotional pain, to our parents watching their babies in pain, we are all on a separate journey that needs support.

We are so grateful for all this family being here, not only for Matt & I, but for Tallan Hope! Mimi and Oma will be in charge of Tallan during this process. She will be having fun at home and around town with her grandparents, aunt & uncle. She will not be at the hospital with us, providing an non- distracted experience for us, as well as a drama free few days for her. I look forward to getting back to my sweet Tallan once this process is over. She will be such a saving grace for my mind.

It's difficult, to put into writing, the mixed emotion we are feeling at this point. We are dreading this process due to the pain we know is coming. We are anxious to start this so we can begin to heal. We are scared to lose Piper. We are grateful Piper won't endure months of pain and surgery. We can't imagine how long it will take to navigate through this pain. We look forward to future family happiness, babies, and healing. Those are the emotions right now. Mixed, confused, but I think, ultimately hopeful.

Again, thank YOU for being our prayer warriors. At times when I am tired, and emotional, I think of the blanket of prayer that surrounds our little family. From the long time friends, the new KC friends, extended family, to all the warriors that we don't even know - Thank you. Your prayers are felt, and I am overwhelmed with emotion as I consider that love you are giving. Thank you.

Leaving you with a few happy happy pics of my favorite family prayer warriors. They have been there through all of this, and the strength we draw from each other is amazing. We love ya'll so much!

Sweet Piper Grace

Hello All.
I am breaking my long blogging hiatus to get something important off my chest. I’ve stayed up countless nights trying to decide how I want to word this post. Finally, I just started to type, and let my heart do the talking. Please bear with me, as finding words has been hard lately. This is a lengthy post, but please take the time to read and pray for my little family.

Matt and I have been quietly dealing with some serious issues involving baby Piper Grace for a while now. Issues we have needed to absorb as a family, pray about, and are finally ready to share with you. Please know, as our extended family and friends, that this post is written for you. We struggled with wanting to share news of Piper Grace with everyone individually; but found the task too emotionally daunting.  We are creating a space here for you to be “in the loop,” as well as our prayer warriors for what we are about to experience as a family.

From the beginning…

*At about 10 weeks pregnant - during a routine ultrasound, our doc noticed a small water accumulation on the back of Piper’s neck, called a Cystic Hygroma.  These little water sacs are, on their own, completely benign and go away after birth for the most part. WHAT THEY ARE – are a little warning sign to check for something going wrong with fetal development. Piper was telling us to look closely, so we did.

* At 12 weeks pregnant – Matt and I went to a high risk Perinatologist to do further testing on Piper, and speak with a genetic counselor. We learned that 70% of babies with a Cystic Hygroma have a genetic disorder. To test Piper’s genes, I went through a big ouchie belly poke to culture a part of my placenta (containing Piper’s genetic code.) Then we would wait for results. Terrible waiting.

A couple weeks later, we took a HUUUUGE sigh of relief as we learned that Piper had a complete set of perfect looking chromosomes! Whew! One hurdle down, praise the Lord!

* At 26 weeks pregnant – We went in for one last test to make sure Piper’s heart was ok (another thing docs worry about when a cystic hygroma is present.) Here, we did a tiny baby ECHO to get an in depth look at Piper’s ticker. This appointment would change our outlook on this entire pregnancy.
                - Piper’s heart anatomy & function was all intact and fine…
                - BUT a Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia was discovered in her chest
                - BUT a Cleft Lip/Palate was discovered
Our plan of care for mom & baby changed right then and there. With these two issues wrong, my care would now be transferred to our (Nationally Recognized) Children’s Mercy Hospital, where I would deliver Piper into the best surgical care possible. We were devastated, scared, and confused.

Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia – when a hole occurs in the diaphragm, allowing the stomach and some bowel to migrate up into the chest cavity, where it is NOT supposed to be. This crushes one lung, leaving it malformed and almost unusable at birth, shifts the heart to the right of the chest, and cramps the other lung, leaving it compromised as well. Needless to say, with the above prognosis, delivering Piper into the hands of surgeons that would fix this was our utmost priority. This was a physical, fixable problem. After an initial emotional freak out, we began to wrap our minds around what plans were needed for our little babe.
Cleft Lip & Palate - when the upper lip, as well as the roof of the mouth does not complete development, leaving a hole in the lip and palate. THIS, silly as is seems, is what broke my heart the most. No one wants to see their child with a hole in their face. We all want perfect little babies. I was so sad that Miss Piper might be looked at differently until she was 3mo old, which was how long they would wait to fix this. Again, this was physical. Fixable. We could do this.

*28 Weeks Pregnant – Now officially transferred into the care of Children’s Mercy Hospital, Matt and I had a big round table discussion with some serious VIPs. Here, we discussed a few FACTS about little Piper’s prognosis:
                - I would be able to deliver naturally/vaginally. No Cesarean needed. Yay!
                - To control her breathing, she would need a breathing tube upon delivery (standard)
                - She’d be given 2-3 days to stabilize her oxygen/food intake before surgery
                - 1st Priority – Surgeons repair Diaphragmatic Hernia
                 - Her lung function, highly affected by her hernia, would be the deciding factor of her survival
                - 2nd Priority – Surgeons repair cleft lip/palate at 3mo of age
                - Her ability to breathe/feed with a cleft would be a deciding factor of her survival
                - Matt and I were looking at MONTHS in a Children’s Hospital with poor Piper
                - Her prognosis would be very very very touch n’ go throughout this process
                - Again. Physical. Fixable. Scary – but we could do this.

Using lists like above make me feel logical. Clinical.  But we were heartbroken. There’s no way to describe the feeling of having no control of a baby growing inside of you. I want to protect her. Matt wants to protect me. We both are emotional wrecks with worry about our baby’s survival, our family living in wait for recovery, our hearts heavy with the unknown. It has been pure agony.

*29 Weeks Pregnant – INSERT AWESOME FAMILY VACATION HERE! Praise God Matt, Tallan and I got to have a week away with our families in Turks & Caicos to fellowship. This was a great distraction and a huge necessity for our little family. Mom, Dad, Grandma, Mark & Kay will never know the healing they did on our hearts just by being there with us. I am so thankful for that bright spot in the middle of this darkness. We are beyond blessed for the family surrounding us in prayer, helping us with Tallan, and loving us through this.

* 32 Weeks Pregnant – (THE BOMB)
Matt and I went in for a follow up heart ECHO, as well as a second round table with all surgeons, neonatologists, the cleft team, and cardiologist to discuss final findings/prognosis of Piper Grace. During our Echo, our cardiologist spent 40min trying to attain a measurement of Piper’s aortic arch. We had no idea how important this little tid bit would be during this final round table discussion.

When Matt and I sat down at this discussion, the first thing these experts ask is, “What is your knowledge of what is going on and the prognosis of Piper?” This is when my logical, clinical self spills my guts with the knowledge I’ve listed for you above. This time, I had to mention the truth of what Matt and I had to painfully discuss over the past few weeks: The fact that Piper, with the multiple issues presented to her, was in for a very huge struggle. A struggle she might not win. What a hard thing to say, but we had to take our hearts there to be prepared, and not shocked if a dire situation did arise.
Upon stating that Matt and I were prepared for the worst of the worst, I saw the doctors sitting in front of me sigh in relief. Then they dropped the bomb on us.

Our cardiologist then spoke up to let us know that one final thing had been discovered. Piper’s aortic arch was not measurable. It was smushed by this hernia, and either too small or twisted behind anatomy where it wasn’t supposed to be. THIS issue is immediately emergent, and would now TRUMP the priorities of diaphragm and palate repair listed above. Rocking our world, and changing the plan, our cardiologist would need to get her hands on our baby first, but will never get the chance.

The aortic arch issue is fixable, but only on a baby with fully mature, 100% working lungs. That’s the bomb – we know that’s not our baby. Piper’s lungs will not be functioning enough to stabilize for the cardiologist to fix her. The bomb. The one last thing. The issue that tipped the scale. The ailment that is just too much. Leaving that round table, the experts in their fields left us with the word “dismal” for Piper’s final prognosis. Heartbreak.

All of a sudden, the wide view of delivery, surgery, recovery, and months of unknown narrowed into one solid black tunnel. Matt and I had prepared for the worst, and the docs had just confirmed we were correct. With her hernia, cleft and heart issues, she will have too hard of a time struggling to breathe to get herself to any surgeon that can help her. All of these issues, all physical, all fixable, have stacked up against her and are too much for her baby body to bear.
Her care plan now consists of making her as comfortable as possible upon birth. The timeframe of life, whether it’s minutes, hours, or a day will not be known until she is here. This is utterly heartbreaking to write, but Matt and I will not have the chance to bring Piper home. God has decided that our baby does not have to struggle. We, as her parents, will take the struggle for her; and now we will take time to heal.

The months of worry about Piper’s fight has taken a toll on us. We are emotionally exhausted, frayed, scared, and hurting beyond words. Because this journey has been such a long one already, we have had time to process some things and try to be as prepared as possible for what is to come.  Randomly during the day, or late at night, I will have a profound thought that calms me, or a question will be answered that’d been bugging me. This can only be God’s Grace preparing me for this next step:

- We are so thankful that Piper will not endure months of struggle; and that her complete healing will be not on this Earth.

- We’ve realized the pain will now be our emotional battle to win as a couple. We can do anything together to get through this with the help of our faith and family.

- We are thankful that Tallan will not have to endure her parents being at the hospital for months. I am not losing the little family I already have. I could not bear to be without Matt or Tallan, and I know their presence will get us through this.

- I’ve struggled with this question: “Why must I go through 9 months to lose our baby?” “Why didn’t I miscarry if something was so wrong?” and I’ve realized that answer is because the God that created ME, made me perfect. This 9mo is a testament to the miracle of my body sustaining life, the miracle of being someone’s mother. For the things my body can do – I am grateful. I was chosen to be the mother of this angel, regardless of her time here on Earth.   Thank you, God, for choosing me, for showing me I have the strength to go through this, that Matt has the love to get us through this. We will get through this.

- I’ve realized that people these days have taken the term “normal” for granted. We are in our 20’s, with no risk factors and this still happened. “Normal” is already the miracle, and I hope to be an example of why we should appreciate that so much more.

- We can fight this journey tooth and nail, be depressed miserable people, and that will not change the outcome of this story. We’ve chosen to handle this with as much grace and poise as possible, so that God can lay his hands on us, and use us as an example of his Grace and Peace during times of terrible sorrow.

- I am blessed to be healthy and able to conceive. I know that one day, once we are healed and ready, that God will bless us with another baby. For that, I am truly grateful.

I am so sorry for this long post, but wanted to get our story out there before we quiet down to prepare for our Piper’s arrival. I hope to keep you posted as updates arise with our little family, and I thank you for taking the time to pray and think of us. There is no greater peace felt, than knowing that family and friends are surrounding us in prayer. Feel free to share with your fellow warriors, we appreciate it more than you will ever know.

To Miss Piper Grace: what a road we’ve been on baby girl, but you have taught our family so much about strength, faith & hope for the future. I know I will look back on this time of pain, and realize you touched us so much more than I can even comprehend now. Thank you for letting us be your parents. We love you so much.

Life Happens...

Holy Moly Batman! It has been 2 months since my last post!

When I started this blog, my sweet baby was napping twice a day, sitting by herself, and allowing mommy a plethora of opportunities for mid-day blogging. Welp, times have changed my friend! I now have a coo coo crazy 15mo old running around, climbing on things, teething molars and fighting naps. (Umm, those molars are no joke folks!)  I'm super psyched to be back to the blog this afternoon. I have so much to catch up with! We've had a hospital stay for a baby butt pimple gone awry ( yep, you read that right!), a family photo shoot, words are being spoken, steps are being taken, daily mama drama and a family trip is coming up! Where do I begin!?

I'd love to share our latest family pics with you - A windy day in the Kansas City West Bottoms. I loved the urban setting and the easy breezy pictures we captured with the help of Wendy Cantwell.
Tallan has officially decided she is over the adorable hair accessories we've gotten away with in previous photo shoots, so her hair is a little wild, but I love it. If you would have told me 15mo ago, that a gorgeous, fair-skinned, blue-eyed, red headed child would be coming out of me...I wouldn't have believed you. Oh, but Miss Tallan Hope, with her silly mommy faces and perfectly drama free attitude, has made me cherish the little silly things about myself that I see in her daily.

Enjoy the pics! Butt pimple stories, cloth diaper tips, and silly mommy stories coming soon to the blog. Promise I won't stay away so long next time!

In a Texas State of Mind

Five and a half years ago, Matt and I moved to Kansas City to embark on our first adventure as a married couple. He was accepted into pharmacy school here, and through the years I have grown to love this city and what it has to offer. After pharmacy school graduation, we decided to stay here to grow our family and experience life as a new pharmacist and a new stay at home mom. I am grateful daily for the life we live here; but from time to time, I reminisce about a place I hold very dear to my heart. Just a tiny little place called Texas...have you heard of it?

Born and raised in the Texas Panhandle, then relocated to the Dallas/Ft. Worth area, I like my hair high, my belts sparkly and my music country. My roots have cowboy boots and my occasional curse words have a slight Texas twang. I don't miss the Dallas traffic, or the Panhandle cell phone reception....but the food and the fine people are constantly on my mind. Most importantly, a piece of my heart is in Mansfield, Texas, where my immediate family still lives today.

About a month ago, Tallan and I sneaked onto an airplane and headed to Texas to surprise Mimi (my mother) with a special visit. We had such a great time, and she was so shocked to see us! With family time in the works and good Tex-Mex in my belly, I had one more thing to check off my list during our stay.

From the moment I learned I was pregnant with Tallan, I hoped we would one day have the opportunity to take pictures in a field of bluebonnets: Texas springtime personified. Lucky for me, I have a friend that could make that happen, and I couldn't be happier with the results. Tamera Lewis, with Snap'd Photography, helped us capture sweet Tallan in one of the most beautiful settings: a Texas bluebonnet field at sunset.

We had such a great time visiting family and are so thankful for the relationships Tallan is building with her grandparents. My visits to Texas always have a funny way of  allowing memories of my past to meld with my present...and give me a glimpse of the future.

Tallan Hope: A Birth Story

Over a year has passed since our lives were changed forever. Tallan Hope has brought us so much joy and laughter, and cliché as it may sound, I cannot imagine life without her! I’ve wanted to share her birth story, and thought a year after her birth would be a great time to reflect. One day, when I’m the over sharing, embarrassing, too many picture taking mom she loves to love…she can read back through this “over share,” and know how her entrance into this world was the greatest moment of our lives.

After a relaxing Easter weekend, I awoke early morning on Monday, April 9th, 2012 to do what any normal 36 week pregnant woman does…..RUN (ahem – more like waddle) to the bathroom! Getting back into bed, I told my husband I had a funny nervous feeling. “What do you mean, funny feeling?,” he asked. I had a butterflies in the tummy feeling that I just couldn't shake. To top things off, our dog Marley had climbed into bed with us (which she’s not allowed to do,) and had laid right next to me. Dogs have a 6th sense right? A sign? I THINK SO! My husband laughed off the aforementioned canine omen, and left me for Pharmacy School around 7am. With a precious 3 more hours left to sleep before heading in to work myself, I could not drift off due to the butterflies.
Giving in to my gut, I got up and proceeded to pack my hospital bag…ya know, just in case! God forbid I go into labor at work and the responsibility fall on my husband to bring me the hospital essentials! He totally would've forgotten my eyeliner! That task completed, I left my readied bag on our bed and proceeded to head to work managing a fitness facility.
First things first when I got to work – the noon boot camp fitness class. My big bellied, swollen ankled self got those dumbbells out and music bumpin'! While getting our workout on, I felt a couple “trickles.” Frustrated that I was now at the point of my pregnancy where I’d pee on myself whilst teaching group exercise, I headed to my office to answer emails. Upon sitting and chatting with a co-worker, I GASPED as one extra “trickle” seemed a bit more noticeable than the rest. I promptly called my doctor and requested to be squeezed in for a quick check for my water breaking….or to confirm that my bladder was deceiving me.
At 4pm, I met my husband at the doctor’s office. As we waited, we both felt silly being there for such a false alarm as peeing on myself, but figured we’d lasted 36 weeks before pestering our doctor with our first timer worries. Silliness was converted to down right SHOCK when the doctor returned to tell us my water had broken, I was 4cm dilated and to waddle my butt right over to Labor & Delivery! Whaaaa!?  Good thing I packed my bag right!?
With Matt’s parents headed to the hospital, my parent’s rushing for a plane from Texas, and Matt running home to grab my bag, I was being signed in to the hospital and getting my IVs. Not knowing how long my water had actually been broken, I was given Pitocin to ensure active labor. Speaking through easy breezy contractions, as my nurse readjusted my monitors, Tallan kicked and broke the rest of my bag of water. Within 5 minutes of the kick, my contraction intensity increased exponentially! As my parents arrived at midnight on Tuesday, April 10th, 2012, I was a little bit ready to tell them “hello, thanks for coming,” and a LOTTA BIT ready to have an epidural.
Epidural in, 7-8cm dilated, and I was one fat happy camper! The next three hours were a blur of chit chat, steady progression, and building excitement. By 3:00am I was ready to push! Channeling the yoga I had taught my entire pregnancy, I was determined not to be the mom who couldn't push well! With G-Dad and Grumpy (our fathers) sent to the waiting room, and Matt, the grandmas, and sister-in- law ready to help me during the long haul of pushing…we were well on our way.

With a calmness in the room I would NEVER attribute to my personality, I pushed 3 times (less than 10min) before little Miss Tallan Hope arrived into this world. Looking back, I have no idea why my type A, intense self wasn't more vocal, scared or stressed….but I just wasn't. Everyone in the delivery room can attest to the cool, calm and collected manner in which our birth occurred. A peace given from God is surely the only answer. We were truly blessed to have such a positive experience, with no complications.
4 weeks early, weighing in at 5lbs 12oz and 19inches long, Tallan was just ready to meet her phenomenal family. Her arrival made a couple of silly married people into the blessed little family we are today. We are still silly, we just added another character.

It has been a year from her birth, and I cannot comprehend how the time has passed so quickly. To sum things up after a year of motherhood: I have never been more in awe of the miracles God provides, scared of being inexperienced, proud for learning how to be a parent, excited to watch my spouse be a father. I love this little person so much it hurts. She is the best pieces of husband and myself all rolled up into this perfect little miracle that God has let us borrow.  Thank you, Tallan Hope, for joining our family. We will
never, ever be the same.

Candy Shoppe Birthday Bash!

It's been a while since I've blogged..mostly due to the fact that my brain has been in overdrive with first  birthday plans for Miss Tallan! Now that our extravaganza is over and done with, I'm excited to be back and share all the fun little details that had been keeping me busy for the past couple months!

We decided on a vintage candy shoppe theme, because who doesn't like a theme party....and who doesn't like candy!? The trick to pulling off such a theme was not so much in the big items, but the small silly details that really pulled everything together! Take a look-see at our party pics below, and I will shoot some tips and reference how-to's and websites along the way!

Bought a Wilton's huge cupcake pan from Michael's, and used the large star tip to make swirls starting at the very top of the cake. Used the leaf tip to zig zag icing on the base, and star tip again to fill in little gaps. This is verrrrry much a pedestrian cake attempt and the mistakes made it look for vintage homemade to me. I used boxed red velvet cake mix and made homemade cream cheese frosting (which I will blog recipe soon!)

My Pier One apothecary jars and canisters made for perfect candy jars! Table covers were fabric from Hobby Lobby! The candy we provided was pastel M&M's, rock candy, gum balls, candy necklaces, lollipops, and cotton candy (all purchased at Party City, except M&M's.) The mini bundt cakes were TO DIE FOR and totally NOT homemade! My parents drove them to KC from Texas...yep, they're that good. Nothing Bundt Cakes are the bomb!

I'm disappointed that I forgot to snap a closer pic of my goodie bags at the top right of the picture above. They were brown paper bags hand stamped with baby owls & "Thank You" stamps from Hobby Lobby, then stuffed with one piece of tissue paper. Guests made the rounds and collected treats for their goodie before leaving the partay!

Picture frame + twine + staple gun + mini clothes pins
Cutest timeline photo idea ever!

Made a homemade chalkboard a while ago, but it came in handy when wanting a cute vintage way to write down some silly Tallan stats! This took FOREVER...writing this neat with real chalk is HARD!

My friend Crystal from The Hown's Den made this amazing bunting banner for me! Fabric from Hobby Lobby. I will use this for all of our summer get-togethers! Looooove is an understatement!

The HIT of the party were the french macarons from Milk & Honey bakery here in Kansas City. They're naturally gluten free and the monogramming was precious!

Metal letters from Hobby Lobby made a great monogram centerpiece, and the scrumdiddlyumptious chicken salad croissants were provided by my MIL! Cute pinwheel toothpicks from Party City snazzed them up quite nicely!

My favorite craft of party planning....the rag tie garland. Many many pinterest tutorials to choose from! I will blog about my experience with this soon!
Tallan and Gmommy & GDaD (hub's parents)

With Mimi & Grumpy (my parents)

With her Uncle "Whiskey"

With Mom & Dad!
I wanted a cute way to have a "guestbook" without really having an old fashion party guestbook. Soooo we made our own Step N' Repeat! Guests chose a fun prop, and snapped a pic with the birthday girl before leaving! I will print all photos and have a photo book guestbook to always cherish!

We had an absolute blast celebrating with friends and fam...and emotions were in check, yay me! (Technically, Tallan doesn't turn one for another week, so I cheated those mommy emotions.) I'll find a quiet corner and sob on her actual birthday! It was a great time to be grateful for so many things: the ability to stay home and cherish this time with my child...as well as plan a birthday bash, for the help of both of our families, for our friends, and for the amazing little life God has blessed us with! A few more pictures of birthday shenanigans are below. Enjoy!
